280 7706   Rarely do you read about a 1,400-yard rusher receiving a pink slip. But the New York Jets may cut Thomas Jones this week, according to a report from the New York Post. The move would add Jones to an odd list of recently unemployed legends, joining Brian Westbrook and LaDainian Tomlinson.  There is an eternally disturbing trend among running backs who breech their 30th birthday. Bill Parcells famously observed that halfbacks only have so much tread on their tires, and age 30 seems to be the axis between a back's prime and his pasture. Jones is 32.   So teams must choose between loyalty and finance in a league that exemplifies the modern mantra, "What have you done for me lately?"   Jones, who rarely fumbles, carries the ball with the care of a marsupial, and scored 14 touchdowns last season. A weightlifting addict,  he has the arms of a linebacker, never hides in the trainer's room, and plays every down.   Although Jones had a stellar season in 2009, the Jets gave an increasing number of carries to rookie Shonn Greene because he, unlike Jones, is young, explosive, and can turn a 10-yard scamper into a 50-yard touchdown dash (like the one he had in the Jets'  playoff game against San Diego).     Jones is due a $3 million roster bonus in March and a $2.8 million salary in 2010. With the emergence of Greene and the expected return of lightning-fast Leon Washington, the Jets will ask Jones to take a severe pay cut. 105 7538 Now that I’ve had some time to look back at the season, I think we did some really great things. We were one game away from the Show, and I honestly feel we’ll get back to that same position next year.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> We did a lot of things wrong, too, but those are the mistakes you can learn from. Now, in the off-season, is the time to work on those things, critique everything you do, your routes, play calling, whatever it is that you do at your position.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> I’m home in <st1:place w:st="on">South Florida</st1:place> for most of the off-season but I’ll be back in <st1:state w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">New Jersey</st1:place></st1:state> around March 20 or so because our workouts start March 22. Unlike last year, I don’t think I’ll do too much traveling this off-season. Last year there was always a charity event or a friend’s football camp to go to somewhere in the country, and I love to help kids and support my teammates. But not much has come up yet this year so I’m just going to relax a bit and wait until my football camp in June.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> I do have a couple things planned, though. On March 10 or 15, me, Leon Washington and James Ihedigbo, and maybe Pierre Garcon, are going to go to Haiti and help kids and families in the communities that suffered from the earthquake.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Also I’m planning a trip through my Foundation to <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Ghana</st1:place></st1:country-region>. I’m trying to get about 10 guys to go to <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Ghana</st1:place></st1:country-region> and teach kids how to play football for 4-7 days, do a little sightseeing. I’m still working on it but I think that would be a great trip. <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Ghana</st1:place></st1:country-region> would be something new. No one in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">America</st1:place></st1:country-region> thinks about <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Ghana</st1:place></st1:country-region>, but I think it would be a good experience for everybody and I love new experiences.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> I had a lot of fun down here the week of the Pro Bowl and Super Bowl, but that was all of the partying I’m going to do. It was great seeing some old friends, as well as my teammates and friends on other NFL teams that you don’t get to see much during the season. We had a great time just celebrating the Super Bowl. I was rooting for the Saints to win, not so much because we lost to the Colts, but because Drew Brees really deserved it. He’s a great player and it’s great to see someone new winning in the Big Show.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Up til now I’ve been kicking up my feet and relaxing, but it’s about time to start working out again. I’ll be training with Jamal Lewis, Quentin Groves and some other players, doing position specific drills, beach workouts and lifting weights. 79 7525 New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is scheduled to have surgery on his left patella ligament in his left knee on Wednesday.  The final decision to have the surgery was made by Sanchez, according to team sources.  The injury first occurred while Sanchez was in college at USC.  Sanchez dislocated his left kneecap during fall practice before his junior year at USC and has worn a brace on his knee ever since.  He aggravated the injury this season against the Carolina Panthers on November 29th. Sanchez, who led the Jets to the AFC Championship Game as a rookie, is expected to be completely healthy by the start of training camp in July.  The team hopes that the surgery will help prevent further problems with his kneecap area. The operation will be performed by the Jets' physician Dr. Ken Montgomery and orthopedist Dr. Elliott Hershman at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Florham Park, NJ. 76.97.188.228

87 7135 Being a lifelong New York Jets fan I've seen my share of accomplishments and disappointments. This year though I saw something in this team I never saw in years past.  There was fire that clearly burned in this team. A "will not die" spirit and even in losses where the offense looked terrible, the Defense gave you something to cheer about. From Revis shutting down the leagues elite receivers to Jim Leonard coming back from wrist surgery in only a weeks time and playing with a cast.   Even the Offense has a wear you out mentality. Looking back through the sands of time great teams all share one thing a tough, gritty and mean Offensive Line. You need look no farther than last years <span id="lw_1264533569_4" class="yshortcuts" style="border-bottom: medium none; background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%; -moz-background-clip: border; -moz-background-origin: padding; -moz-background-inline-policy: continuous;">Super Bowl Champion Steelers to see that.   In the past Jet fans have been frustrated with whiny Quarterbacks and soft defenses. Then came an out spoken rookie head coach to a team that clearly lacked direction. Rex Ryan has done more to change the morale of not just this team but this fan base in one year than Mangini and Edwards did in their stints combined.   Ryan tells his players, the fans, and the media how it is and sugar coats nothing. I have never seen so much Green and White. Even in 98 when the Jets last made it to Championship Sunday behind Bill Parcells was there this overwhelming feeling of pride.   JetsNation is back and better than ever. So for those of you who consider this season a failure well that's your opinion. Did Rex get us to a Super Bowl year one? 343 7080 This weeks AFC Championship game on Sunday between the New York Jets and the Indianapolis Colts brings together two quarterbacks on opposite ends of the spectrum.  For the Colts you have Peyton Manning, four-time MVP, Super Bowl winner, and playoff participant year after year. A veteran that can pick apart defenses as if they were not even on the field. The Goliath of NFL quarterbacks. <o:p> </o:p> For the Jets you have Mark Sanchez, rookie quarterback from USC that has, even in his rookie NFL season has played more games in the pros then he did while he was in college. A quarterback that has had his ups and downs as all rookie quarterbacks have in the NFL. The David of NFL quarterbacks. <o:p> </o:p> The Colts are the number one seed in the AFC and the Colts were the number 5 seed, definitely the Cinderella team in this years playoffs. The only questions is whether the rookie can conquer the vet, can David slay Goliath, and can Cinderella get one more bit of magic from the Fairy God Mother, come out on top and live happily ever after? <o:p> </o:p> Sanchez will rely much more on the running game then Manning will, but if he can play smart and not make any mistakes when he does pass the ball, the David just might come out on top once again. <o:p> </o:p> In their first meeting this season, the Jets came out on top. The Jets did have the top ranked defense this season, and in that game they held Manning and the Colts’ high-powered offense mostly in check. However, Manning, along with other Colts veterans only played for two-plus quarters in that game. The Jets know that they will not have that luxury this time around and that they will be seeing Manning & Co. for four quarters this time around. It is the AFC championship game and a Super Bowl berth is on the line. <o:p> </o:p> The Jets realize the Colts could have put more points on the scoreboard against them if not for some unlikely errant throws from manning. He missed wide receiver Reggie Wayne by a step early in the game on a long pass that most likely would have been a touchdown if it was on target. Manning also overthrew tight end Dallas Clark by a step or two on another long pass in the game that could have been caught for a touchdown if it was on target. <o:p> </o:p> Two misses in one game is not likely to happen again from Goliath this time around. Especially with so much at stake. <o:p> </o:p> However, the Jets are confident and believe that they can beat the Colts again this Sunday if they execute their game plan and put constant pressure on Manning and get him to the turf. <o:p> </o:p> “We were playing with him and holding them down and were confident,” defensive end Mike DeVito said. “We’re confident going into this week. We have a great plan and we’re ready to go, and I don’t think there’s any doubt that we can go out there and win this game.” <o:p> </o:p> The trick though is actually getting to Manning. He was sacked only 10 times during the regular season, the fewest in the league, and he is a master at deciphering defenses and picking them apart. <o:p> </o:p> Despite the fact that the Jets only allowed 15 points in their first meeting, they were unable to put much pressure on Manning. Before coming out of the game early in the third quarter, Manning was 14 for 21 for 192 yards in the Jets 29-15 victory over the Colts in week 16 who at the time were undefeated. <o:p> </o:p> “If I take anything away from that game, it’s that I must know my job that much better than he knows his job,” defensive lineman Marques Douglas said. “Saying that, I have to press the pocket and get in his face because a guy like that, if you don’t pressure him, it’s going to be a long day.” <o:p> </o:p> The Jets defense feels that if they can get to Manning, it will work to their advantage because Goliath does not want to get hit and they feel that they can rattle him and his linemen with constant pressure throughout the game. <o:p> </o:p>  “He doesn’t want to get hit,” safety Kerry Rhodes said. “So, if there’s a free guy, he’ll actually just go down and give up the sack. If you get pressure on him, once you do that, he gets to talking to his linemen and they’re a little edgier and a little rattled.” <o:p> </o:p> “You can’t let him sit back there and get his feet planted and throw with ease,” linebacker Calvin Pace said. “We need to get him off his spot a little bit, give him a couple of different looks that he hasn’t seen. There is no one better than Peyton Manning, and everybody knows that.” <o:p> </o:p> Even if the Jets have the perfect defense called, with Manning at the helm sometimes it still will not matter. <o:p> </o:p> Manning has the uncanny ability to get the ball and accurately pass it quickly, avoiding pressure simply because the defensive linemen and blitzing linebackers can not get to him soon enough. <o:p> </o:p> Things get even more frantic when Manning goes to the no-huddle, 2-minute offense, waving his arms, moving players around, making audible calls, actual or not, and trying to confuse the defense. <o:p> </o:p> The Colts running game ranked last in the league by averaging less than 81 yards per game and the Jets believe that they can hold them and put Manning in more third-and-long situations which could increase the chances for mistakes. <o:p> </o:p> And, to a man, the Cinderella Jets believe they will do just that, even with a full game of Goliath, the seasoned veteran, Peyton Manning. <o:p> </o:p> 76.97.188.228

138 6981 If anyone out there has watched the New York Jets this season, you probably have changed your mind about 36 times when deciding if you think this team is a contender, or a disaster.  After the first 3 games, Sanchez looked like an 8 year vet, leon washington looked as explosive as any change of pace back in the game, and the Jets Defense appeared to be as tough as Tiger's wife's mental state.  And with a blink of an eye, Jet fans were brought back down to Earth to realize, these are the New York Jets.  With herendous losses including a 5 interception performance against the Bills, the same game the Jets managed over 300 yards on the ground, the Jets made the impossible seem possible- but in a sickening way.  To make matters worse, Leon Washington, possibly the Jets biggest offensive threat, and Kris Jenkins, one of the best run stopping linemen in the past 10 years, were both put on injured reserve, essentially ending their season and their team's season respectively.   Soon the coaches had to meet to discuss the gameplan for the remainder of the season.  I wasn't at the meeting, but when assessing what they had in the locker room in regards to strengths and weakness, this has to be what they came up with.  They can run, they can play D, they cannot move the ball through the air.  So, how bout that as a gameplan?  Lets run, control the clock, and let Revis Island and company do their thing on defense.  By the way, Charles Woodson winning Defensive Player of the year had to be some type of joke.  His numbers were better, but thats because quarterbacks threw to him.  You think any quarterback targeted their receiver that was covered by Revis? Why would they? It would just waste a down.  The guy covered every single elite WR in the game, and did not allow any of them to put up more than 40 yards.  Unheard of.  Unfortunaltey, statistics win awards.  Woodson's packers are eliminated from the playoffs after giving up 50 plus points.  By the way, have you heard Ocho Cinco's, excuse me Chad Johnson's comments after the past two games? I havn't either.  Thanks Revis aka the human muzzle.   But anyway, here we are today, with the Jets in the 2nd round of the playoffs.  Playoffs? Playoffs? You kiddin me, playoffs? [Jim Mora] For those out there who are Sanchez haters and non-beleivers, I propose the idea of giving the first year quarterback a second chance.  I'll repeat that, first year quarterback.  Hes had more ups and downs than a prop plane in a snowstorm, but bottom line is his team is one of the final 8 teams remaining, and if he holds onto the football and doesn't throw it to opposing defenders, the Jets have a real shot at reaching the big game.     If you have followed this team for the past 15 years or so, you most likey have gray hair, or not enough hair at all anymore.  This is a team that  fills up your balloon with hope, and then right when the balloon is about to take off, its pops.  But ya know what, those are the teams that you gotta love.  If your team wins year after year, after year after year, you can basically only be disappointed.  If you were to ask me right now would I rather be a Jet fan or a Colts fan, I'm going with the New York J-E-T-S.  If they lose, they are supposed to lose. If they win, its a greater feeling than finding out the girl of your dreams actually is attracted to you.   Theres no better feeling than rooting for the underdog when the underdog is creeping up the mountain.  And you gotta love Rex's comment about how the Jets should be Super Bowl favorites.  He isn't being cocky, hes not even  trying to anger opponents, because nobody takes those comments seriously.. expect for his players, his soldiers, who know that their General and commanding officer  believes that whenever they take that battlefield, their army is more powerful and stronger than the opposition.  Confidence is something you can't teach, but can be instilled in others.  Hope everyone enjoys the rest of the playoffs.  96.246.109.177

450 7051 A Jets fan yesterday was arrested after cheering for the Jets during the Jets-Chargers playoff game in <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">San Diego</st1:place></st1:city>.  What is the world coming too? When was it against the law to root for your favorite team on the road during an NFL game? Well, in <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">San Diego</st1:place></st1:city>, when the Chargers are losing a playoff game, roosting for your team can get you arrested.     Here is a video of the event that took place. <o:p> </o:p> <object height="344" width="425"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/wJqd_5fC7ZI&hl=en_US&fs=1&" /> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> <param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><embed height="344" width="425" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/wJqd_5fC7ZI&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>   In watching the video it is obvious that the fan was just showing enthusiasm for the Jets, who beat the home town Chargers in a big upset 17-14. <o:p> </o:p> The video shows the Jets fan chanting “Jets, Jets, Jets” and then the next footage shows him being arrested by at least six police officers. <o:p> </o:p> Yes, after the chanting the footage stops and goes directly to the arrest, making you wonder what actually might have happened in between, but the fact that there are numerous Chargers fans pleading with the police that the guy did not do anything wrong while the police were attempting to hand cuff the man tells you that the arrest was unwarranted. <o:p> </o:p> There is also the fact that that a Chargers fan gave his phone number or other information to the arrestees girlfriend tells me that the fan did not in fact do anything in which to actually be arrested for. <o:p> </o:p> The fact that the CHARGERS fans defended him during the whole fiasco, tells me that he was not being too drunk or doing anything wrong. <o:p> </o:p> Shame on the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">San Diego</st1:city></st1:place> police force. <o:p> </o:p> What is next, a gag rule for any fan rooting for the opposing team? 163 7020 We leave for <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">San Diego</st1:place></st1:city> today, but it’s already been a long journey to get to this point. Nobody thought we could get this far, but we got it done and here we are, two wins from the Super Bowl.<o:p></o:p>  Personally I hope the Ravens beat Indy so we can play the AFC Championship Game in <st1:state w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">New York</st1:place></st1:state> if we get that far. That would be great for Jets fans and that would be a lot of fun.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> I’m excited but I know we have to win this game first. Rex says we can and I believe him. The Chargers are a real good team, but I think we can come out with a win. I’m not putting anything past us. <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> The Chargers have a great linebacking corps with Phillips and Merriman, they’re a great team, but there’s nothing that says we can’t dominate them offensively. We’ve got some of the best athletes in the world on our team. With our running game going strong, our offensive line and Mark making good decisions, at the end of the day I think we’re going to make the plays and come out with a win.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> A lot of people have asked if a rookie quarterback can win in the playoffs. A rookie quarterback already has won in the playoffs. We’ve won one playoff game and we’re just taking them one game at a time. <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> For me, I would definitely sacrifice all of my catches to make sure we get that win. It’s all about being unselfish this time of year. <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> I’m still young, it’s my third year in the league and I’m excited to be on a team that has a chance to get to the Super Bowl. It would be the coolest thing ever to get there, and I know the rookies are just full of joy, guys like Mark and Jamaal Westerman. <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> The real big deal is that if we get to the Super Bowl I’m playing at home in <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Miami</st1:place></st1:city>, and I would love for that to happen. 105 6834 On Sunday, September 27th, the New York Jets improved to 3-0 sitting atop the AFC East. Jets fans everywhere were writing their team’s name into the Superbowl—Rex Ryan was the greatest coach of all time, and Mark Sanchez was on the fast track to Canton, Ohio.  As can often be the case, New York fans can be brash, they can be quick to jump the gun, and they can be unjustifiably confident. <o:p> </o:p>The Jets quickly lost three in a row and seven of eleven before taking the final two games of the season, and on December 20th, head Coach, Rex Ryan, prematurely wrote the Jets out of the playoffs. The Indianapolis Colts were vilified for “giving” the Jets their 8th victory of the year and ultimately punching their ticket to the playoffs. This is not outlandish because, yes, at points of the season the Jets have looked like a minor league ball club; but, the Jets have also looked like a playoff team at times as well, and now, that is exactly what they are. Although just weeks ago, head coach Rex Ryan, was apologetic for a failed season;  he is now proclaiming that anything can happen once you get into the tournament and of course this is the case—the 2007 New York Giants for one. <o:p> </o:p> The Indianapolis Colts and the San Diego Chargers are the clear favorites to advance to the AFC Championship game, but do not just count out the Jets. If the correct team shows up, (the special teams that do not give up two run backs to Ted Ginn Jr., the rookie quarterback who does not pass six interceptions, and the Defense who does not give up a touchdown as seconds tick down on the game clock), then the Jets have a fighting chance.  The New York Jets are ranked 1st overall in the NFL in Defense, this includes points allowed, yards allowed, and pass yards allowed. The New York Jets defense put on a show in Game 16, and they hold arguably the best Cornerback in the game, Darrelle Revis, sole proprietor of Revis Island. <o:p> </o:p> Similarly, the Jets are 1st overall in the NFL in Rushing. Thomas Jones is third overall, behind only Chris Johnson and Steven Jackson, in total Yards in 2009 with 1,402. He averages 87.6 Yards per game, and is tied for third with fourteen touchdowns. Shonn Greene and Brad Smith proved to be effective weapons as well, running all over the Bengals defense in last night’s matchup. <o:p> </o:p> With a Rookie Quarterback at the helm, the running game is very important. If Sanchez can keep the ball out of the opponent’s hands, the Jets will certainly have a chance. While the Jets rank 1st in Rushing, the San Diego Chargers and Indianapolis Colts rank 21st and 24th overall respectively at defending against the run. Since the Jets have already proven they can beat the New England Patriots and Cincinnati Bengals that leaves the Baltimore Ravens as the worst matchup for the Jets and their run game. <o:p> </o:p> As Chad Ochocinco would say, if you are not watching the game next week, then you have no life. 140 6668  At the start of the season, the talk of the NFL were the teams that started out undefeated.  Two of those teams were from New York.  Or, at least New Jersey and call themselves New York.  Perhaps it had some New Yorkers dreaming of a New York vs. New York Super Bowl.  Now, those two teams would be lucky to make the playoffs.    The Jets started out 3-0.  Rookie Quarterback Mark Sanchez was the first QB to win his first three starts.  Then the Jets went to New Orleans, and then the losses started.  At one point, first year head coach Rex Ryan was crying at a team meeting.  It brings to mind the quote from A League of Their Own that "there's no crying in baseball".  One problem that comes from that: what do you do for an encore?  If the crying does not motivate your team, what do you do next?     The Jets are now one of <a href="http://playerpress.com/articles/stuck-in-7th-at-7-7">six teams in the AFC stuck at 7-7</a>.  But of those teams, they have what could be one of the tougher roads, facing the undefeated Colts and then the Bengals in the final week.  The good news is that the Colts have wrapped up the number one seed in the AFC, but may continue to play the starters trying for the perfect record.  The Bengals are still trying to clinch the AFC North, and it remains to be seen how much the Week 17 game will mean to Cincinnati.    The Giants started the season 5-0, then like the Jets, they went to New Orleans.  The Saints continued their winning streak by knocking the Giants from the unbeaten teams.  That started a stretch for the Giants where the Giants went 2-6.     Here is a Playerpress writer that is a Giants fan that is convinced <a href="http://playerpress.com/articles/giants-will-make-the-playoffs-rest-assured">the Giants will still make the number 6 seed</a>.  The road to the playoffs begins with a Monday Night matchup tonight against Washington.     If the Giants win, they will still be a game behind the Packers and the Cowboys.    After tonight's game, the Giants still have games remaining against the Panthers and the Vikings. 76.97.188.228

177 6595   The New York Jets made the singular mistake of playing football in a stadium named after another football team, which is only slightly better than playing in a stadium built for a baseball team.   The Jets have done both, and now compound the problem by following the Giants to a new stadium next door. The name doesn’t change, and neither should the fates of the franchises. Neither team has the sense to bear the name of their state (New Jersey) but the Giants have an identity and three rings, while the Jets have Joe Namath, nostalgia, and nine bare fingers.  <o:p></o:p> And now the Jets will impose a PSL (tax) on people who watch them lose for a fifth decade. It is not enough that you endured A.J. Duhe, Mark Gastineau’s late hit on Kosar, “Lam” Jones, Blair Thomas, Johnny Mitchell, Rich Kotite, Bubby Brister, Neil O’Donnell… So let’s say you pay $200 per game for your seat to watch the Jets be the Jets. You must now pay around $20,000 for the right to buy that seat in the new place. This is not fiction. This does not include the actual price of the seat. This is for the right to pay the money for the seat. Just like the Jets: take something bad and make it worse.  <o:p></o:p> Does a team need an identity in order to win, or does winning create the identity?  <o:p></o:p> We don’t know. We do know that the Jets are a New York team. Queens, to be exact. There was plenty of room to build a new crib for the boys, but ownership wanted to make a splash, which failed.  <o:p></o:p> The answer was not, as owner Woody Johnson wanted, a move to Manhattan. Just like the Jets: take something bad and make it worse. There’s not enough traffic near the Lincoln Tunnel without any attractions or distractions. The answer was to drop a million tons of concrete along the West Side Highway.   <o:p></o:p> So rather than embark on a sensible search back to their ancestral home, the Jets play the younger brother, following Big Blue to another dark room.   <o:p></o:p> Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan were rookie quarterbacks with rookie head coaches and somehow made the playoffs last year. This led some to think that another rookie QB (Mark Sanchez) and rookie HC (Rex Ryan) could lead another playoff run.  <o:p></o:p> Ryan, the chubby chief with the porn star’s name, talked as big as his belly, started 3-0, and then channeled the spirit of his pops (Buddy), who also made his bones as a coordinator before flopping at the helm.  <o:p></o:p> Sanchez, groomed by a former Jets head coach (Pete Carroll), is model-handsome with happy feet in the pocket and a proclivity for providing the enemy the football. Carroll said that Sanchez (who had another year of eligibility at USC) needed another year before playing in the NFL. All indications are that Pete was prescient.  <o:p></o:p> There is promise in both men (Ryan & Sanchez). But do you really think this will work? Doesn’t it always look promising for the Jets? Didn’t Bill Parcells have Gang Green finally Mean, two quarters from the Super Bowl?  The Jets are that stripper who grabs your wallet, sits on your lap, then goes home with the bouncer, while you solemnly retreat, broke, left only with your imagination.  <o:p></o:p> They forget that these are Jets, and few things finish well in the high grass of the Meadowlands.  <o:p></o:p>  <o:p></o:p> ****************              <o:p></o:p> The Meadowlands. Such a pretty name for such an ugly place. Having lived five minutes from Giants Stadium for ten years, I know the drive by heart. Take Route 3 west, over that bridge with more bumps than Jessica Simpson’s face, and look right. The buildings rise out of the swamp like a traveling circus that stopped traveling 60 years ago: too large and ornate for the area, addled with new projects, including a new, atrocious edifice (a mall or something) that looks to be built with confetti.  <o:p></o:p> I spent time on the glorious banks of the Hackensack River – obscenely cold in winter, rancid in summer. Sit on the porch and spend half the night smacking your cheeks to keep the mosquitoes from zipping up your nose.  <o:p></o:p> Northern New Jersey is really Queens-West. The accent is thick, the hair is high, and blue is the collar. Huddles of two-family homes dominate the land, as do strip malls, strip clubs, and sports bars.  <o:p></o:p> An occasional flea market springs up during the warm months. Last summer, Riddick Bowe begged us to buy his autograph for thirty bucks. As a boxing writer first, my heart broke way beyond words. But it is perfect that this transaction occurred at the Meadowlands. This is where dreams and teams go to die.  <o:p></o:p> A sign implores you to take Route 120 to Moonachie, a racetrack, a basketball court, and a football field. The Meadowlands – a sanctuary for compulsive gamblers and masochists. Doesn’t everyone need a beer at 10 a.m. and the latest odds for the race in Hong Kong?  If that goddamn December wind doesn’t kill you, the team you watch, the race you bet on, will.  <o:p></o:p> Assuming you can get there. Because of all the construction you must park in what feels like another county. Your car jiggles over the speed bumps of snow. You climb out of your car and the wind smacks the snot off your face. You sigh as you take in the hike to the building, leaving Yeti-sized tracks in the ice on your way to another loss.  <o:p></o:p> Remove the Giants and you have a swamp, an amalgam of water, weeds, and geese that leave the same gifts on your windshield that the Jets have left on your heart.  <o:p></o:p>  <o:p></o:p>  <o:p></o:p> ****************  <o:p></o:p>  <o:p></o:p> Quick – who plays in the Izod Center?  <o:p></o:p> Right.  <o:p></o:p> It’s another team that left New York for New Jersey and hopes to return to New York.  <o:p></o:p> The New Jersey Nets took a month off, going 0-18 to start the season. But they’re serious now, a sizzling 2-4 since they gave the NBA a head start. Their head coach, Lawrence Frank, got whacked after 0-16, and for having two first names. (I made up the second part.)  <o:p></o:p> The Nets are delicate, like an egg, and if you look past the cracked shell the yolk is somewhat promising.  <o:p></o:p> Rod Thorn, the team’s top dog, is a genius. Try to choke your chuckle. He drafted Michael Jordan. Okay, that was easy. But when Thorn arrived in New Jersey, the Nets hadn’t been relevant since Dr. J’s Afro soared over ABA rims in the 1970s.   <o:p></o:p> He drafted Kenyon Martin, who would have been an all-star for a decade had he not been injured. He traded for Richard Jefferson and traded (Vasoline-guzzler, sexual-harasser, and team-killer) Stephon Marbury for Jason Kidd, perhaps the sporting steal of the last century. Kidd brought gold to the swamp, and a name to the Nets. After two trips to the finals (losing both), and a cheap owner who traded Martin to Denver, the Nets crumbled.  <o:p></o:p> Though Thorn stole Vince Carter from Toronto, it was not enough to get Kidd the ring he deserved. Kidd, a basketball savant, tends to pout after a few years in one town. He demanded a trade to Dallas, where he also will come absurdly close to winning.  <o:p></o:p> The Nets got Devin Harris in return – a much younger, faster player with plenty of that oft-nauseating “upside.” Thorn then drafted center Brook Lopez, a guaranteed 20-and-10 guy for the next decade. A core is beginning to form, and the Nets have mucho cap space for the regal free agent class, whose bell is set to ring in 2010.  <o:p></o:p> Maybe Jay-Z (an owner of the Nets) and Alicia Keys can sing a song and lure LeBron to Brooklyn. Some rich guys have usurped the Atlantic Yards, the same land that should have been used to keep a baseball team in Brooklyn 50 years ago. The Dodgers left in 1958, and took half the soul of a city with them.  <o:p></o:p> Eminent Domain, an obscure phrase, is all the Constitutional talk recently. It sent the Boys of Summer to a place where it’s always summer. And it’s the Fifth Amendment loophole that could bring the Nets to Kings County (hopefully with King James). Brooklyn Dodgers just sounds better, doesn’t it?  <o:p></o:p> So why does one team win (Giants) while two teams lose? (And don’t discuss the Devils, as hockey is on par with curling in terms of American popularity.)  <o:p></o:p> There’s something to be said for staying home. Sure, the Giants played at the Yale Bowl and Yankee Stadium, but that was before football was football. And they had a place built just for them, not a hybrid deal splitting schedules and fans. Ask the baseball Giants what it’s like to leave New York (zero World Series titles). How has Joe Torre fared before and after his Bronx Tale?  <o:p></o:p> At least the Nets have always had the sense to bear the name of their state. I really think we can do it without a doubt. I know in the bottom of my heart that we can do it. This team is sticking together, still playing hard, still grinding.<o:p></o:p>  I’m not sure of Mark’s status. I see him spending time in the trainer’s room getting treatment to get better as soon as possible. Anytime the starting quarterback is hurt, the rest of the team has to step up and play. Whenever anyone’s hurt, someone has to step in. With Kellen Clemens I know we’re going to be fine. He’s a very experienced quarterback, he started eight games a couple years ago in the regular season and he’s been in quarterback battles with Chad Pennington, then Brett Favre, and now Mark. I have a lot of faith in him that he can get the job done this weekend if he has to step in. He’s not a young quarterback, the coaches will just let him do his thing and he might even get away with some things that Mark doesn’t.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Right now I’m excited either way. A lot of people are doubting us, which is fine with me. 127 6232 Fantasy football has undoubtedly changed the landscape of professional football.  Over the last few decades (and particularly with the rise of the internet), these alterations have grown seemingly exponentially.<img width="263" height="350" alt="" src="http://www.cse.edu/resize_image?path=/dotAsset/85292.jpg&w=265" />  Millions of dollars and hours are spent on fantasy football, yet, as fans, we frequently have difficulties imagining how fantasy football affects the players.  The superhero-like status that these men garner often makes this task more difficult, as we sometimes get so caught up in the game that we fail to realize that, unlike most games, this one is based on reality.  Fantasy football, in many ways, is no different than a fantasy chefs, or bankers, or truck drivers league might be (other than the fact that no one would play the latter three).   Nowadays, most fans seem so quick to judge and critique everything NFL players do, both on and off the field, yet very seldom do we see the same amount of praise.  Many often respond to this fact by claiming that, as fans, they have a right to criticize and even boo their team’s favorite players, and fantasy football, which has taken the level of fan involvement to an entirely unique level, has only perpetuated this notion.  But is this truly the case?  How do NFL players feel about fantasy football and the way it has altered fans’ involvement and attitudes?   I spoke with Jets’ WR David Clowney to answer this question and find out more about the Queens, NY native.   Q:  How familiar with fantasy football were you when you came into the NFL, and how familiar are you with it now?   A:  I really had no idea about fantasy football before coming into the NFL.  Now I do know a little bit more, but really not that much, or as much as most fans might think.  I, along with the majority of NFL players, actually do not play fantasy football.   Q:  Do any guys on the team play fantasy football?  What is the feeling of the team and players in the NFL in general regarding the game?   A:  Yes, some guys do play and I have heard some guys talking about their fantasy team before.  The team is always hyped for the game.  We are always prepared and we just have to make everything happen on the field.  I do not think fans truly understand the amount of preparation we put into each and every game.   Q:  How do you think fantasy football has changed the game?  How many times do you hear fans yell “I have you on my fantasy team”?   A:  I don’t think fantasy football has changed the game too much, but I do think it has helped the fans get more involved.  They tell me on Twitter every day that they have me on their fantasy team and most fans yell from the stands “Make sure you give me some fantasy points today.”  I think that is kind of cool.   Q:  You are obviously on Twitter.  What do you think of players using Twitter and do you feel it gives you a more direct way to touch base with your fans than going through the media?    A:  We are able to interact with fans very much through Twitter.  I personally do a Jets trivia contest on Twitter with the fans every Friday/Saturday.  It is also a good way to let friends and fans know about things you are doing.  For example, I am very involved with the community and putting together things with my Foundation, so when I had my Youth Football Camp in Florida and my NY Jets Bowling Event in New Jersey I was able to let a lot of fans know through Twitter, and both events had great turnouts.   Q:  Do you have any pre-game rituals?   A:  Yeah, I wear this orange shirt that I have had since high school.  I have worn it for every game.  I also listen to three songs that always get me hyped for the game.   Q:  You played basketball and ran track in high school in addition to playing football.  Which sport is your first love?   A:  Football has always been my first love.  Track came natural and basketball kept me busy when there wasn’t anything else to do.   Q:  How much time do players spend “working” i.e. practicing, watching film, working out, etc.?   A:  Again, fans do not realize how much work we put in, as we are at the facilities from 7am to 5pm every day.  We are in meetings, watching film, and outside practicing, and those times so not include the extra work each individual puts in every day as well.   Q:  What are your fastest ever 40-yard dash, 100-meter dash, and 200-meter dash times?   A:  My fastest 40 is 4.28, my fastest 100 is 10.40, and my fastest 200 is 21.2.   Q:  A lot of fans don’t understand players have a life other than playing football.  What do you enjoy doing other than playing football?   A:  Yeah they really don’t understand we do other things than football, but I enjoy spending time with my family and friends.  I like to play video games with my little brother and I really love movies.  I have my own Blockbuster at home.   Q:  What did you major in at Virginia Tech?   A:  It’s Residential Property Management (dealing with housing and real estate) an right now I’m getting my Masters in Criminal Justice at The College of Saint Elizabeth in New Jersey.   Q:  Anything you want to let your fans know, fantasy football-related or not? 199 6218 Thursday I’ve got about 25 people coming over and I’m doing all the cooking. It’ll be a feast with ham, turkey, collard greens, mac and cheese, cranberry sauce, peach cobbler and sweet potato pie.I’ve got people coming in from Florida, Connecticut and New York. I told a couple of teammates they should swing by, too. I know Bart Scott is having a catered Thanksgiving dinner at his place. When everybody gets too crazy at my house I’ll probably sneak away to Bart’s house and kick it over there. Everybody has been upset the last couple weeks about how things have been going. We’re losing games we should be winning, without a doubt. That’s the way I feel personally and the way the team feels. A lot of people are frustrated. With a rookie quarterback there are always going to be mistakes made. The biggest thing is to learn from those mistakes, but in the NFL you can’t learn over time, you have to learn that week. Right away. Mark is a great guy and I believe he’s already a great quarterback. We all just have to get rid of the mental mistakes and we’ll get back to winning games again. I want to talk about that Twitter thing. I don’t know exactly what happened, someone hacked into my account and went stupid crazy on my Twitter page. I just want to let the fans know that wasn’t me. I definitely want to apologize to anyone who was offended, but it wasn’t me. A guy with the team got in touch with someone from Twitter and took my page down so they could delete all those messages and change my password. So I have cancelled my Twitter account for now. Dang, my dogs just ran away and I don’t know where they are. I just put them in a cage but they ripped a hole right through it. I have to go get them, gotta run! 154 6212      Surely you’ve heard the saying if you mess with the bull, you’re gonna get the horns. Well, Jets coach Rex Ryan just found out how true that saying was last Sunday against the Patriots.       When Rex Ryan was hired as <st1:state w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">New York</st1:place></st1:state>’s head coach, he immediately called out Bill Belichick. That is understandable from the perspective that <st1:place w:st="on">New England</st1:place> is the class of the NFL. Along with that poor choice of words, Ryan also decided to bait opposing players into verbal spats via the media. What an immature sap. <o:p> </o:p>      Rex Ryan needs to glue his lips together with cement. In the NFL, it is not a coach’s job to trash talk, or talk at all for that matter. Leave that to the players. College football is the place for a coach to speak for his players, not the National Football League. Even as a first-time head coach, he should know better. <o:p> </o:p>      Prior to the Jets first meeting with the Patriots this year (a win at home, 16-9), Ryan couldn’t seem to keep his or his players mouths shut. They came out that Sunday and backed it up with what <st1:state w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">New York</st1:place></st1:state> tabloids called a “dominant win” (I guess it was as dominant as a 16-9 game could be). After all the talking that went on from the <st1:state w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">New York</st1:place></st1:state> perspective, there was plenty of the proverbial bulletin board material. Sunday’s 31-14 win by <st1:place w:st="on">New England</st1:place> was done in emphatic fashion, led by a now-healthy Tom Brady. <o:p> </o:p>      With under a minute left, game well in hand, Tom Brady threw a deep ball to Randy Moss which fell to the ground, incomplete. That, understandably, angered Ryan. Is it possible though, that Rex forgot what he said about the Patriots in the preseason? My magic eight ball says don’t count on it. Even if he misremembers that, he surely doesn’t forget the verbal hazing prior to their first meeting, right? Again, my magic eight ball says no chance in hell. <o:p> </o:p>      Did Rex Ryan really expect anything less from the king of making a statement? If so, he is more than a fool. The Jets began the year winning football games, and now that they (and the rest of the NFL) have realized that they start a rookie QB and are not half as good as the game they talk, reality has set in. The talking has ceased; then again, losing will do that to you. The Jets are 4-6, only one game ahead of the last place Bills. <o:p> </o:p>      So, following the beatdown handed to him and his players at Foxborough on Sunday, Rex Ryan cried wolf. He said he was ‘disrespected’ by Belichick’s attempt at finishing the once-talkative Jets like a Mortal Combat character would finish his opponent (finish him!). Hey Rex, if you’re going to open your mouth, be ready to have your foot shoved inside. 131 5878 Former Pro Bowl kick returner and Jet Justin Miller had been released by the Oakland Raiders earlier this season, and was spending a few anxious weeks at his home in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Atlanta</st1:city></st1:place> sitting around and waiting for a call that he was not sure he would ever get.  Miller has had workouts with the Kansas City Chiefs, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the New York Jets. However, he was still with a job and facing the likelihood that his NFL career could be over. Miller is only 25 years old. <o:p> </o:p> “You have your thoughts and your ups and your downs,” Miller said “You think, ‘Wow. Is this really the end? Am I going to get the chance to go back and really show I can still play and prove that I belong in this league?”’ <o:p> </o:p> Miller finally got the call he was waiting for from the Jets. They signed Miller on Tuesday to be the team’s primary kick returner and replace the injured Leon Washington, who actually replaced Miller two years ago. <o:p> </o:p> So in essence, Miller is replacing his replacement on the Jets. Does this mean that once <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">Washington</st1:state></st1:place> gets healthy that he will replace the replacements replacement once again? <o:p> </o:p> As confusing as that sounds, it will not happen this season as <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">Washington</st1:state></st1:place> is out for the season after breaking his right leg in the Jets 38-0 win over the Raiders on Sunday. <o:p> </o:p> Therefore, it is once again Miller time in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">New York</st1:state></st1:place>.   “If it was up to me, I’d rather come back under different circumstances,” said Miller, who has known <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">Washington</st1:state></st1:place> for several years. <o:p> </o:p> Miller was originally drafted out of Clemson in the second round of the 2005 draft as a defensive back, but Jets head coach Rex Ryan said Miller would not play in the secondary this week against the Dolphins. The main reason for this is because he does not know Ryan’s defensive schemes and will need to learn the defense. <o:p> </o:p> However, Ryan does know one thing about Miller, and that is that he can return kickoffs. <o:p> </o:p> On the plane after the game against the Dolphins, as Ryan and GM Manager Mike Tannenbaum were thinking of who could replace <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">Washington</st1:state></st1:place>, Miller’s name was the first one that came up. <o:p> </o:p> In his second season, he was named to the Pro Bowl after leading the AFC in return yard average. He was also named the NFL’s Fastest Man after he won the 40-yard dash competition before the Pro Bowl. <o:p> </o:p> Another ironic twist is that he originally lost his job to <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">Washington</st1:state></st1:place> after he was injured himself when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on a return against the Ravens during the second game of the season. <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">Washington</st1:state></st1:place> took over and became a Pro Bowl kick returner himself, which made Miller expendable. <o:p> </o:p> Miller was waived last November by the Jets and claimed by the Raiders one day later. While with the Raiders, Miller returned two kickoffs for touchdowns.
